Renovation Progress at Deerfield Island Park
BROWARD County Parks and Recreation is embarking on a massive and unique project to turn this urban wilderness into an easily accessible experience for all its visitors.
Projects underway are replacement of all the old composite boardwalk with natural wood, removal of some of the invasive Australian pine, clearing an area and expanding the original butterfly garden to at least 5 times the area of the original, creation of new wandering pathways with a rubberized composite surface for comfortable walking, and usage by a walker or even a wheelchair. All renovations are ADA compliant.
The purchase of a barge has made this possible. Hopefully, next summer will see the re-opening of this unique urban wilderness.

Nature Trails: A half-mile sandy and rocky Coquina Trail that meanders through coastal hardwood hammock and remnant scrub. A three-quarter-mile Mangrove Trail, partly through sand and partly over the newly completed boardwalk through the mangrove wetland.
Free self-guiding maps for both trails available at the kiosks. Picnic tables and grills are located throughout the park on a first-come, first-serve basis. Two wheelchair-accessible boardwalks are also available at two picnic areas.
Weekend Shuttles: A free park-operated shuttle provides transportation to the island on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays hourly from 10am - 3 pm. All shuttles leave from the dock at Sullivan Park. The last shuttle returns from the island at 3:45pm. Children ages 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult to ride the shuttle. The shuttle is dependent on weather conditions, so please call 954-357-5100 to confirm the shuttle is operating if the weather looks questionable.
Private Boating: Marina access is also available for private boats under 25 ft from 9:30am - 4:30pm, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
