Low maintenance plants save you time and effort while looking beautiful. You can enjoy colorful blooms and much greenery without constant watering, pruning or replanting. From sun loving flowers to shade tolerant plants, they’re a perfect option for every spot in your yard.
Note that most of these flowers require little care once planted and most attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Enjoy!
Not all flowers thrive in this climate but here are a few that brighten our area.
ENJOY! Happy Summer!
Beach Sunflower:
This native plant thrives in sandy soil and loves the sun. You’ll enjoy its cheerful yellow flowers that bloom year-round. Beach sunflowers grow low to the ground spreading up to 4’ wide.
To plant, simply scatter seeds in a sunny spot. Water lightly until established. After that, it needs little care.
This hardy perennial attracts butterflies and makes great cut flowers. Use it as a ground cover or to edge patches and borders in your garden
Blanket Flowers
They are perfect for Florida in colors of red, orange and yellow. They’re tough plants that can handle heat and drought. To plant blanket flowers, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Space them about 12 to 18 inches apart and water regularly until well established, then reduce watering.
Blanket flowers also attract butterflies and bees to your garden. They bloom from Spring to Fall giving months of color. Cut off dead flowers to encourage more blooms.
Scarlet Sage:
This is a stunning perennial that brings vibrant color to FL gardens. Its bright red flowers bloom from Spring to Fall, making it a favorite among hummingbirds and butterflies. This low-maintenance plant thrives in full sun and partial shade. You can easily grow Scarlet Sage from seeds or cuttings. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly until established. This plant is drought tolerant once mature. Trim back spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Scarlet Sage grows quickly, reaching 2 to 4 feet in height. I’s perfect for borders, containers or as a colorful garden accent.

These are cheerful, sun-loving perennials. Their bright yellow petals and dark centers add a pop of color to any landscape. These hardy flowers thrive in sandy, well-drained soil. Plant in full sun for best results. They are easy to care for. They attract butterflies and bees, and are great for pollinator gardens. Black Eyed Susans are drought resistant once established, saving time and water. To plant, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and place the flower as it was in its container, water regularly until it is established.
Purple Coneflowers
They are a tough, low-maintenance perennial. Their pink, purple daisy-like blooms add a pop of color from Spring to Fall.
