Renovation Progress at Deerfield Island Park

BROWARD County Parks and Recreation is embarking on a massive and unique project to turn this urban wilderness into an easily accessible experience for all its visitors.

Projects underway are  replacement of all the old composite boardwalk with natural wood,  removal of some of the invasive Australian pine,  clearing an area and expanding the original butterfly garden to at least 5 times the area of the original,  creation of new wandering pathways with a rubberized composite surface for comfortable walking, and usage by a walker or even a wheelchair.  All renovations are  ADA compliant.

The purchase of a barge has made this possible.  Now the final design stage for converting the original caretaker's cottage into  an  Education and Nature Center is underway.  Hopefully, next summer will see the re-opening of this unique urban wilderness.
